„Hi Simon! Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for eat blog love. How are you?“

Hello eat blog love! I am doing well, thanks for asking.

„You graduated the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the summer 2012. How did you start working with Normann Copenhagen?“

I started working with them in 2011. I showed some projects I had done, which they liked. Sumo pouf was my very first design in production for Normann Copenhagen.

„How would you describe working with Normann Copenhagen?“

It’s a close collaboration where I don’t have to sacrifice anything from my original design. When I begin to design a product I often have a few ideas about colours and names. And these are often the ones we end up choosing. Having a good dialog with the manufacturer is something that I value highly. It helps me to get close to different production technics which can optimize the process a lot.

„You designed a lot of my favorite products for Normann Copenhagen, such as the Block Table, Oona Carpet, Ikono and Amp Lamp, Pocket Organizer and one of your newest products the Form Table and Armchairs.  What is your favorite product that you designed for Normann Copenhagen and why?“

The process of the Form Series was very interesting to work on, but also very long, it took over 3 years to get all the details correct. Even though it looks quite simple it is quite complicated… It is also my graduation project from the design school, so that is why it holds a special place in my heart.

„A lot of my favorite designers are danish. Why do you think Denmark is boosting so many great design companies?“

Denmark has a long history when it comes to furniture design, so I think it’s only natural that you see a lot of new companies passing on the culture.

„While I was preparing this interview I recognized accidentally that I already own a Simon Legald design, one of your school projects called Friends from 2010. Can you tell me a bit about it?“

It was a project I did beside my school, as a competition, the project did not win, but they wanted to put it into production anyway. But the idea was to create a more industrial version of old Danish wooden toys, but still keep the naïve and friendly look.

„When did you realize you wanted to be a designer?“

I always thought that I was going to work in the advertising business, but when I was about 14 years old, I analyzed an advertisement for a designer chair and that was my first meeting with the term „design“. After high school I studied at Krabbesholm Højskole, where I took a semester in art, and afterwards product design. This was where I realized that products are something that I want to spend my time creating.

„What is your favorite material to work with?“

My starting point is often looking into the function and archetype of the product, and then work my way towards something new but recognizable, sometimes the material is a starting point for the product, and other times it is the product itself. I don’t have a specific favorite material, each material has its own qualities, so I think it depends a lot on the product.

„Where do you currently live and what does your home look like?“

It’s medium-sized and organized place, with various things from the past and present. Most of the furniture I made myself during my time at the design school.

„What are your hobbies?“

I’m a bit of a bike collector; they are such nice simple machines. I collect British bikes from the 30’s to 50’s. There is something fascinating about this period. The craftsmanship is unique in many ways and you will find many wonderful solutions and details in the bike industry, especially after the World War II period.

„And finally my last question. Have you ever been to Berlin, my home town?“

Yes, I have been there around 6-7 times, and only have good memories of the city. I especially like the smaller parts of the city like Kreuzberg where you have many small and more unique streets.

„Thank you for the interview, Simon. I can`t wait to see more of your designs!“

;) Mal sehen, ob davon irgendwann mal was einziehen darf.

      Schöne Ostern,

      Deine Sarah
